The story begins with two young girls, Satsuki and her little sister Mei, moving to the countryside with their father. Their mother is in hospital recovering from illness and their new home in the farming community will provide her with a healthy environment for her to recover once she leaves the hospital. Amidst the girls worries for their mother and the strangeness of coming to a new place, they discover something truly magical--totoros! These friendly but shy spirits of the forest build a friendship with the girls that is full of laughter, surprises and fun... just what the doctor ordered.

Of Interest: Disney recently purchased all of Miyazaki's animated films including this one which was originally dubbed and released in North America by Fox. As a result, Disney will be re-dubbing and re-releasing Totoro with a completely different voice cast, with the release likely coming out sometime in 2005.
