Svankmejer's Faust is an ordinary man who, upon leaving a Prague subway station, is handed a map that leads him to an abandoned theatre where he finds a copy of Goethe's 'Faust'. Assuming the title role, he reads aloud, unwittingly summoning up a demon which promises him his every desire in exchange for his soul. A macabre mixture of live action, stop-motion, and puppetry.
