Of Interest:

This project was originally developed by Chris Sanders, (director of Lilo and Stitch), under the title of "American Dog". When John Lasseter took over the role of Chief Creative Officer at Disney in 2006, he and directors from Pixar and Disney took a look at an early cut of the film. According to sources, Sanders resisted the suggestions made by Lasseter and the other directors. This led to the decision that Sanders be replaced by Chris Williams as director. Lasseter has been quoted as saying "Chris Sanders is extremely talented, but he couldn’t take it to the place it had to be." -- source: New York Times article, He Runs That Mickey Mouse Outfit
