Asterix the Gaul
Asterix the Gaul © Darguad / Belvision

In the year 50 BC, ancient Gaul (France) is completely occupied by the Roman Empire - except for a small village, which holds out against the Roman invaders with the assistance of a magic potion which conveys superhuman strength, brewed by their druid. Finding out about the potion, a Roman Centurion kidnaps the druid to learn the secret of the potion, leaving the village's hero, Asterix, to save the day.

Of Interest:

The first Asterix graphic novel was published in 1961. By 1965 the books were so popular that the first French satellite was named 'Asterix 1'. The USA followed suite with 'Snoopy' and 'Charlie Brown'.

The Australian DVD lists the English dub voice cast, but frankly I believe it to be completely wrong, as it refers to characters who aren't even in the movie, and also refers to characters by their correct names, whereas in the movie they were mostly given different names. In fact I think it's actually just the English dub cast for 'Asterix and the Big Fight'. I don't feel confident to put it in the database, but for what it's worth, here it is:

Bill oddie - Asterix
Tim Brooke-Taylor - Cacofonix (Stopthemusix)
Bernard Breslaw - Obelix
Peter Hawkins - Getafix (Panoramix)
Douglas Blackwell - Vitalstatistix (Tonabrix)

For some reason, though all the Asterix films are on DVD in Australia (and I believe the UK) in English dub, Amazon USA only has imported French language copies on DVD, though they do have some English language ones on VHS.
